Traditionally, Afghan Zieglers have only a couple of colours featured on the rug, but this piece has quite a few. The dark blue background is a good basis to contrast against the gold, cream, light blue, green, orange and teal.

Please click the hyperlinks in gold if you are interested in additional information.

Afghan Ziegler rugs and carpets have generally been made in softer tones and different colours for the last twenty years. However, things must move on, and 'welcome to the modern Ziegler rug'. While the design is similar, the colours have changed somewhat, and they are now producing more lively tones.

Our Modern Ziegler collections are relatively new. Each handmade rug has many classic Ziegler designs and motifs. They tend to have many more bright colours than traditional Ziegler carpets. The bright, jewel-like colour is maintained primarily by reducing the amount of washing. The classic Zieglers are heavily washed to produce the appearance of age.

Often, people are curious about the William Morris connection. Ziegler worked collaboratively with William Morris, taking his designs and securing weavers in Tabriz and Sultanabad to produce fine examples of traditionally made carpets produced explicitly for the export market booming Victorian Britain. The processes were developed at the weaving stage, more crucially extending into the finishing process, particularly the herbal washes used. The fashion was to experiment, and the early Ziegler designs were quite different from this period's traditional rugs and carpets. The Oriental rug trade had not been used in this way before. In many ways, the pioneering techniques used by Ziegler & Co. have been part of the inspiration behind some of the newly designed pieces from Afghan weavers, like the Samarkand and Mamluks.

When buying online, it is worth considering the company and the rug.
